Insider Access: Emerging Designer Khevyn Xacau

Khevyn Xacau (pronounced Zay-KOO) is an emerging designer to watch. He strongly believes in creating his own destiny and I fully expect it to be a fabulous one. The designs of Khevyn Xacau Couture are sophisticated and striking with intricate details and construction that speaks of Khevyn's training, which includes:
  • The 2012 New School University's Merit Scholarship
  •  An Associate Degree in Applied Science in Women's Sportswear, with a specialization in Digital Textile Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology
  • A Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion, with a specialization in Menswear from Parsons School of Design.
  • Internships and volunteer work with several fashion brands including Donna Karan International and Badgley Mischka's Platinum Sportswear.

Khevyn was bitten by the fashion bug at a young age...

“I was five when I discovered my cousin’s Barbie Fashion Plates toy! I hid under my bed for hours mixing and matching tops and bottoms … her knee length a-line gored skirt with a beautiful bishop sleeved blouse. A pair of wide leg bell-bottoms, with a capped sleeved horizontally-striped t-shirt. I had never felt such amazement! I knew making clothes was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life at that point ... and here I am!
Although I credit my mom for encouraging my predisposition to the arts and design in every form possible, it was Barbie - the bitch who has everything - who ignited the fire that made me the designer I am today.”
What type of woman does Khevyn visualize wearing his designs?
"The Khevyn Xacau Couture Brand is for a woman of distinction. Educated, strong, and passionate about a great number of things. She is revered by others as a model of personal style and sophistication. She possesses the perfect balance of feminine beauty and masculine charm."
Khevyn's debut Autumn/Winter Collection is entitled Modern Metroyshka, inspired by the Russian wooden nesting doll...
"It is in our nature as human beings, to guard our fragile emotions, nesting them beneath the surface like that of a Russian Matryoshka doll."
Khevyn is in the process of scheduling viewings of his collection with buyers from Saks, and Patricia Fields. He is currently working on a lot of made-to-measure pieces for personal clients including dresses for the 2014 Tony Awards and some evening gowns for the Brooklyn Museum Opening of the Kehinde Wiley Exhibition later this year.

Khevyn has also been asked to submit pieces for the Columbia University Lunar Gala Fashion show this spring. In addition, he is working on a Khevyn Xacau White Shirt Project in which he will design ten white shirts, for spring, to be sold on his Etsy page ... The proceeds of which will go to benefit The American Heart Association.

Khevyn already has expansion plans for the brand. This coming spring and fall collections will feature hand bags and belts by Khevyn Xacau Couture as well as a collaboration with Washington, D.C. Jewelry Designer; Dookw, on necklaces and earrings.

"I do plan on venturing further into menswear, but at the moment, consistency is what matters most to me and womenswear is my passion."
