The British Fashion Council Creates The Jewelry Initiative: The BFC Rock Vault

Yesterday the British Fashion Council (BFC) announced the brand new jewellery (FYI - I'm using the British spelling of jewellery within the post since this is from the BFC) initiative ‘BFC Rock Vault’ to support, showcase and promote Britain’s most innovative fine jewellery talent, curated by Stephen Webster and sponsored by the International Palladium Board (IPB). The'Rock Vault' will launch during London Fashion Week, February 17th-21st, at Somerset House.

The ten successful jewellers who have been selected to showcase their AW12 collections within the Rock Vault are Alexandra Jefford, Fernando Jorge, Hannah Martin, Hillier, Husam El Odeh, Jo Hayes Ward, Jordan Askill, Melanie Georgacopoulos, Sophie Bille Brahe and Tomasz Donocik. The designers will feature alongside five concepts created in Palladium by Central Saint Martins students.

The participants are invited by a panel led by Stephen Webster comprising Anna Orsini, British Fashion Council; Brad Mills, Chairman of IPB; Caroline Broadhead, Central Saint Martins’ Programme Director; Catherine Nieto, Grazia Fashion and Accessories Editor; Francoise Tessier, Browns Fine Jewellery Buyer; Jos Skeates, EC One; Katie Bain, British Fashion Council; Lara Bohinc, Designer and Cartier Consultant; Liane Wiggins, Matches Head Buyer; Maria Lemos, Rainbowwave; Olivia Richardson, Liberty Head of Buying; Sarah Mower, MBE BFC Ambassador for Emerging Talent and contributing editor for US Vogue.com; Valery Demure, marketing and sales, jewellery and accessories agent.

H&M Design Award Finalists Announced Today

A jury has selected six brilliant finalists for the H&M Design Award 2012. The finalists now compete to win the global Design Award. The finalists are from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the UK, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

The winner will show their collection at Mercedes-Benz fashion week in Stockholm, February 1. There will be a live stream at 1.30 pm (EST) at the design award site: designaward2012. The winner will receives a prize of €50,000 and also get the chance to have chosen pieces from their collection sold in selected H&M stores later in the year.

Visitors to the site can also vote and help their favourite designer to win the prestigious prize of a one-month internship with Christopher Kane’s studio.

The judges are Hilary Alexander, Fashion journalist; Christopher Kane, Designer; Susie Lau, Fashion blogger; Kristopher Arden Houser, Fashion journalist; Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Design H&M; and Margareta van den Bosch, Creative advisor H&M.

A Glimpse of the Spring/Summer 2012 Haute Couture Shows

I consider haute couture the foundation of truly, creative fashion design. This venue is where you have the opportunity to experience the full scope of fashion as a form of art. Who cares if some things are just not wearable. It's all about the creativity. I can't imagine having the gift to conceive of the designs ... I am, in essence a fashion groupie, but on the artistic, appreciator level. I don't follow the trends. I react to what I like and occasionally buy what I know will look great on me (if I can work it to fit within my budget - which isn't always that easy).

British Fashion Council's Fashion Forward Sponsorship Winners

The British Fashion Council (BFC) announced today that three womenswear designers; Henry Holland, Louise Gray and Mary Katrantzou, and one menswear designer; James Long, will receive Fashion Forward sponsorship for two consecutive seasons to show in London. James is the first menswear designer to receive support through this scheme.

Fashion Forward is a key BFC initiative to promote emerging design talent. The award provides the winner with a cash prize to assist in showing their collection at London Fashion Week as well as access to business support provided by the BFC.

Fashion Forward applicants are judged by a panel of key industry representatives that include Averyl Oates, Retail Expert; Caroline Rush, CEO, BFC; David Watts, Business Support Manager, BFC; Francesca Burns, Fashion Editor, Vogue; Ruth Chapman, Co-Founder, Matches and Sarah Mower MBE, BFC Ambassador of Emerging Talent, Contributing Editor to US Vogue and American Vogue.com.

The roster of previous Fashion Forward winners include Christopher Kane, Erdem, Giles Deacon, Jonathan Saunders, Louise Goldin, Marios Schwab, Meadham Kirchoff, Peter Pilotto, Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Illincic, Sinha-Stanic and Todd Lynn.

I'm sure the book is great. I purchased the ebook app for iPad and am very happy I did.

The ebook app showcases the pictures amazingly well. I love being able to zoom in on the details. It's especially nice to simply plug in a headset to hear the background music and watch several videos of Carolyn Sarkozy, Interior Designer and Editor of the book, discuss the interiors.

The list of Paris homes featured includes those of Diane Von Furstenberg, and supposedly Lenny Kravitz ... His home is not named in the descriptions (which are conveniently provided in multiple languages) and I'm not really into following celebrities, so I have no clue which grand interior is his. The books sells from $33.00 to $59.00 (depending on where you get it). The app costs $3.99.

My Favorite Eye-Catching Bags

I'm a sucker for a good bag. Although I prefer the sophisticated and functional styles for daily wear (I'm a working girl after all), I am very drawn to unusual, artistic pieces that are still somehow, timeless.

Below are my three favorites (two are at least seven years old).

I love Trussardi's printed leather, the leather whip-stitching, and bone handle and toggle.

I was lucky enough to stumble on this hand-crafted cigar box bag with thoughful inserts to keep the bag's contents in the bag. The inside still has a smoky cigar smell.

This unique top handle satchel can hold a lot ... It's about 18" long.

I admit I am a little on the advant garde side and have been guilty of altering bags to get the desired edgy effect ... I once dyed a tomato-red leather bag black, then used acetone to get an acid-wash effect with touches of the red bleeding through (I still have it).

I was browsing the sales at Rue LaLa yesterday and noticed they had chocolate covered jalapeños listed. I thought that was an interesting combination.

I have purchased the chocolate covered strawberries and pretzels ... For the family. I am not a chocolate lover. I think it's my karma for stealing all of the Halloween candy when I was a toddler. My mother eventually found my "stash" under my pillow.

One Way to Repurpose an Airplane

I was browsing through Luxe magazine when I saw a unique ad (pictures are below). Motoart developed this brilliant desk. They recycled the wings of an airplane, creating an innovative, three-legged desk. I gather the legs are part of the landing gear.

I would love to see it with a tufted, satin Louis-style chair in a solid or animal print. A James Bond looking tuxedo-stripe would be nice too. I'd top it off with an elegant chandelier. That kind of stimuli would motivate me to pop open the laptop and get to work.

Giambattista Valli Accepted into the Chambre Syndacale de la Haute Couture

Why is this a big deal? He not only achieved the prestigious status of a select few. He also did it in record time. Giambattista Valli was accepted after five months instead of the usual five years.

The British Fashion Council is still pushing forward despite the ongoing drama with the fashion weeks schedules.

Yesterday: They released the shortlist for the 2012 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund.

The shortlisted designers showcase the best developing Womenswear and Accessories labels in British fashion, with potential to develop into global fashion brands: Jonathan Saunders, Marios Schwab, Mary Katrantzou, Meadham Kirchhoff, Nicholas Kirkwood, Peter Pilotto, Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Ilincic and Zoe Jordan.

Today: They released the provisional London Fashion Week schedule.

The dates are:

Womenswear Catwalk Shows & Exhibition: Friday 17th February - Tuesday 21st February 2012
Menswear Day: Wednesday 22nd February 2012

My iPad & iPhone (I rarely power up my laptop these days)

My most unusual favorite is a printer ... An HP Envy. Why? It's an air printer. So I can print from my laptop, phone or iPad without worrying about wired connections.

It also doesn't look like the typical printer. I think I might be a closet geek in addition to a shopaholic.

The British Fashion Council (BFC) today released the names of 15 of London’s brightest emerging fashion designers ... They won the BFC NEWGEN sponsorship and will show at London Fashion Week in February 2012.

Craving a Bit of Leather

I have been eyeing a few leather jackets for about a month now. Why? I have an old standby that I've had for at least ten years and crave an update.

I decided to visit the Kenneth Cole store yesterday because:

My intention was to look at sweaters ... I am not a big fan of cold weather.
I like that he supports causes like Aids Awareness.

My search was derailed when I glimpsed this faux fur and knit long scarf (the picture doesn't do it justice). It was fabulous and cozy ... Do I really need to say more? It was just the perfect fit for me ... someone who loves escapism.

Last night, Uma Thurman, Blake Lively, Chace Crawford, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Hudson and Selma Blair were among the guests who joined Donatella Versace and H&M to celebrate the launch of Versace for H&M in New York. In a specially designed building on the Hudson River, Versace’s collection for H&M was shown on the catwalk, alongside some special iconic pieces created just for this exclusive runway show. These iconic Versace looks were worn on the catwalk by top models such as Abbey Lee, Daphne G, Natasha Poly, Sean O’pry and Lindsay Wixson. The show was followed by an after party which featured exclusive performances by Donatella Versace’s special guests, Prince and Nicki Minaj.

Revisiting A Site That Specializes in the Exotic

I am a confessed shopaholic. To reign in my temptations, I have developed a list of before I buy criteria:

Am I in love with it
Is it well-made
Can I visualize wearing it as part of at least three outfits

My newest criteria is quality vs. quantity. This addresses my knee-jerk reaction to a good sale. I have plenty of basics. I now am trying to only focus on the unique items that have that little something extra that makes my heart skip a beat.

One of my old favorites that totally addresses my urges for the exotic is Vivre. Vivre was launched in 1996 as a luxury mail-order catalog, which has evolved into a luxury website. I probably discovered it in 2000. It is chock-full of unique pieces that speak to my love of escapism.

The first photo is of a calf pochette that is layered with coque and emu feathers as well as luxurious laser-etched leather ones creating a dramatic effect. Check out the gloves with the embedded watch.

The H&M Dragon Tattoo Collection debuts exclusively at the agenda-setting boutique "Colette" in Paris on November 28. It is available worldwide as from December 14 in H&M/Divided departments, as well as online.

Trish Summerville, the costume designer for this film, has made the H&M Dragon Tatto Collection - a women's collection with attitude. It's dark, urban feeling with leather jackets and torn jeans is inspired by the film's anti-heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Trish Summerville is one the top costume designers in Hollywood, designing for both movies, celebrities, and artists.

My mind is racing lately. Probably due to the excitement I feel about being back at 100%. I'm finally back from an intense battle with a stomach virus last week.

I decided to revisit my copy of Harper's Bazaar's Runway Report. I love reviewing the designers. I especially love looking at the emerging ones.

Haider Ackermann really stood out to me. Not only because I noticed his genius early on, but also because he consistently confirms it. It just has to be a gift to combine such beautiful, luxurious fabrics with such edginess. He makes luxe grunge that's actually elegant.

The Bottega Veneta email I received last night definitely caught my eye. Their use of blackened silver lace gives a funky vintage feel to the pieces.

I don't like to feature negative posts. Unfortunately this designer is unreliable. I had to resort to filing a claim to receive a response (shipping info) on an item I ordered over a month ago, and what arrived today was not what was pictured.

It was the second time I received something different from what was pictured (both items were ordered on the same day).

I have bought multiple pieces of jewelry from Jody McGill, of 1ofmykind.com, and have featured her work. I love to support emerging designers. I don't support unprofessionalism.

This Designer Touched Me

The Thrill of Getting Show Invites

I can still remember my first invite to a fashion show. It was for the Paris show of Ont Front; a menswear label that combines beautiful old-world, Bespoke, Savile Row-style tailoring with funky, modern touches. The show was sponsored by Gaspard Yurkievich.

I was sooo excited. Not because I felt fabulous or was a diva (I subscribe to the school of thought that true fabulousness comes from what appears to be a rare gift these days ... class & treating others with respect), but because I love beautiful things and really love seeing creativity.

Gifted creativity touches me. When it does, my eyes pop and I just think, "How does he/she/they come up with that? I'm witnessing a true gift."

I have this same reaction with beautiful art, furniture, music, and dance. I am an appreciator ... I am energized by experiencing art.

I still get excited with each invite/evite I receive. This season stared with one from Pringle to an event at Central Saint Martin's and has included Melbourne Fashion Week, Washington, DC's Latin Fashion Week.

My first Milan evite of this season came from Gucci (they always seem to be scheduled first). Below is the what they also sent me to share with you:

The Top That Intrigued Me

This top caught my eye. The sophisticated feminine touches appealed to me. It sparked instant visions of several outfit options.

I instantly saw it with the bottom pushed up a little and paired with a simple, pin-striped pencil skirt that has a mid-calf length ... The best length to highlight/create the illusion of curvy legs. I would finish off the sexy preppy look with pointed-toe flats.

My next vision was of it worn with a slim pant and peep-toe booties.

The third look was of the top with full-leg trouser pants and a pointed pump. It could be worn simply this way or topped off with a feminine blazer, sweater or a cropped jean jacket for fun and to further emphasize the curve at the hips.

I also saw it as a wear-friendly alternative to this Vera Wang bustier I've been eyeing.

Anticipating New York Fashion Week

FNO has started or is about to start soon. It's exciting but reminds of the pep rally the night before the big homecoming game ... Fashion Weeks.

This caught my eye. It stood out in my inbox. It's from the FINSK A/W11 collection.

FINSK launched in 2004 ... Founded by Julia Lundsten who has made a name for herself as a gifted shoe designer. London based, Finnish born, Lundsten is a designer with a strong vision and unique,directional style.

Julia graduated from London’s Royal College of Art in 2003 and has received a string of awards for her designs, including the prestigious Manolo Blahnik Award two years running and the 2010 Elle Style Awards where she won Accessories Designer of the Year in Finland.

This DVF top combines my fav design elements; polish, comfort and edge.

This jewelry designer creates amazing handmade filigree pieces. I've bought two of the three pieces shown (Can you guess which?) ... A total of eight from her - Jody McGill of 1ofmykind Jewels.

The next three are from Etsy, where I coincidentally found Jody (She has more, like the two rings above, on her site.).

This silk paper origami light shade can easily double as a work of art when the light is off. GreenWallNL ships from the Netherlands. His prices and shipping rates are very reasonable.

These pillows are well-made and very intricate. They come in various colors and fabrics. MillDesignsCo also accepts custom orders.

This look struck a chord with me. The tunic-style dress is sophisticated and comfortable. The print is funky. It's more about style rather than a trend. The adorable fringe suede boots call to me as well. I visualize this look with a big, black hobo (although I rarely carry one). I had to share.

Designer Label Verrier

I first discovered Verrier when I was on one of my "Ladies Who Lunch" blouse searches. I actually included a Verrier blouse in one of my Temptations features.

The blouse was beautiful. I loved the easy elegant style of the piece. The blouse and the name stuck and I wanted to see more.

Designer Ashleigh Verrier references modern glamour. That's a great description.
