Matte lipstick in red, deep red and burgundy colors ... This is the on trend look for lips. I prefer to focus on my preferences ... Colors and textures that complement my lifestyle and coloring.
My dream lip color meets the following criteria:
It must also be in a flattering color that complements my complexion, which is a milk chocolate brown with red undertones. So I tend to gravitate to rich burgundies in matte textures ... which just happens to be the current trend.
- rich, pigmented color
I was ecstatic when Nars introduced their Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga a few years ago. The color was rich enough to be worn alone, plus it totally flatters and enhances my coloring. The best part is that this lipstick has pretty limited color transfer.
I also longed for a deep red-burgundy lip pencil to pair with it. I was so happy when I discovered Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics' (OCC) Black Dahlia lip pencil. Prior to OCC, I was forced to use a deep brown lip (or eye) pencil.

I also prefer to add a finishing touch to my matte lipstick. I love adding a gloss or luster color to the center of the bottom lip ... It controls the focus and softens a dramatic lip color. My two favorite choices, depending on my goals, are:
- Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Hopi - It offers a nice warm glow that delivers a glamorous touch (similar to the look in the first picture).
- Anastasia Eye Lights Pencil in Lace Shimmer - Although this pencil is meant to highlight the eyes and eyebrows, the texture is soft enough for the lips. It adds subtle shimmer (a light touch is key) and doesn't alter the texture or lasting power of the lipstick.
