The Beautiful Work of Basil Soda

The more I look at his collections, the more I'm convinced that there is true beauty in the work of Basil Soda.  The intricate details are far beyond the norm without being "far out there".  It's couture but you know you'll get exactly what you pay for ... amazing creations that are ultimately works of art.

I blink quickly when I see the workmanship.  My mind says "Wow!!!"  The details seem to somehow they make the photos look like they're in 3D.  Imagine touching these garments. Yummm.

Vanity, Thy Name is Beastly?

Narcissism is en vogue. It is currently fashionable to be fabulous ... but there are limits to "beautiful.

Many have taken this perception of fab to extremes.  I've always believed true fabulousity is like true, old wealth ... Those who really have it feel no need to flaunt it or call attention to themselves. It's like Bottega Veneta's slogan ... "When your own initials are enough".

It appears the movie Beastly, a modern day remake of Beauty and the Beast, touches on the ugly side of being one of "the beautiful ones". See star Vanessa Hudgens' interview below:

My Almost Fashion Obsession

I decided to browse my favorite sites to see what was out there this weekend.  My heart stopped for a second when I saw this bag.

It was perfect ... sophisticated, yet creatively unusual. Yep, I must repeat. It was perfect. I instantly fell in love but walked away.  I recently bought a bag and how practical was this.  Could I justify the purchase?  Would I really use it? Did it fit my cost-per-use model to rationalize (or walk away from) a purchase.

The answer was no. The handle that was soo appealing, was thin (and wrapped around metal) ... It would cut into the hand even if I could possibly reduce the contents to just one item (as if I could limit myself to carrying just one thing in my bag).

But the funky look of it tugged at my heart.  So I returned to the site two more times.

Fate stepped in ... it was sold out.  I was a little sad (I know the rules of the game; "You snooze, you lose."), but I was being fiscally responsible ... I also had my eye on other things (I just sent you a wink).

I had to share this temptation - My eyes still zoom  in on this picture as, I image, the mouth of a chocolate addict waters on seeing the richest piece of fine Belgium chocolate.

It Seems Fashion is in Fashion

There have been a lot of new waves of trends in television ...soaps, talk shows, prime time, game, cooking, celebrity shows, housewives & girl shows (Girls Next Door, Bad Girls, etc.), home design & real estate, and, of course reality.  Will fashion evolve from a sub-category of reality into it's own category?

If the influx of upcoming fashion shows is any indicator, it will. Perhaps Sex & the City & The Devil Wears Prada had a larger affect than we originally thought. Look at the list:

  • Project Runway
  • Running in Heels
  • The Fashion Project
  • Kell on Earth
  • The Rachel Zoe Project - and baby makes three ... Go Rachel!
  • I must follow Rachel with Brad's new Bravo show,  New It's a Brad, Brad World
  • Lauren Conrad's show
  • The Fashion Show
  • The Pan-African show Stylogenic
  • India's Let's Design
  • New The Fashion Star - Elle Mc Pherson's new project with NBC - there's been buzz about a designer casting call
  • There's even an online fashion reality show called, "So You Wanna be a Designer"
  • New  The Annabel Tollman Project - her background includes being a fashion director at Interview

I'm a little exhausted just listing all of these shows.  It's quite plain to see fashion is already its own category. As in real life, it always is.

A Look at the Creations of Two Designers

Temperly

I was so impressed with the recent Temperly show.  Her designs were pure sophistication and beauty. So imagine what her wedding collection could be.  Here are a few pictures:

Paul Smith

I just love how cheeky Sir Paul Smith's designs are. Here are the words from his site:
The subtle combination of signature menswear influences, quirky detailing and iconic multicoloured stripes embrace the essence of Paul Smith.

Girls with rockabilly hair, dark shades and loosely knotted ties blur the gender boundaries in crisp, boyish loose-fit shirts teamed with slim trousers, rolled or cropped, that finish above the ankle.

H&M’s Fashion Against Aids Raising Awareness & Using Unisex Styles

Fashion Against AIDS (FAA) is high on H&M's "To Do" list. This year the collection comes with a new twist.

The FAA project is a campaign designed to raise both funds and awareness. So far, it has donated over 41 million Swedish Krona for Designers Against AIDS (DAA) and various other international HIV/AIDS projects. Because the HIV/AIDS message is as important for young women as much as it is for young men, the sporty unisex collection is for everyone to wear in their own way. The collection is available in H&M’s Divided department from 26th April. For each purchase of an FAA style, 25% of the sale will be donated to youth HIV/AIDS projects around the world.

H&M's project has celebrity backing including Selma Blair, Keri Hilson and Penn Bagdley.

Photos from the Jacqueline Conoir & JAC by Jacqueline Conoir F/W 2011 launch, this week, at the Ferrari Maserati Showroom

Vacouver Fashion Label Jacqueline Conoir celebrated 25 years. The sold-out Fall/ Winter 2011 fashion show was held at the 3-story glass Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver Showroom. Guests discreetly entered via the back alley and were ushered into the industrial 30-person car elevator to the third floor. There they were greeted by music by DJ Kasey Riot and elegant water bottles labeled with the Jacqueline Conoir 25 year campaign brand image. The wine bar by Mission Hill Reserve and sparkling wine bar by Henkell flanked the party space while the catwalk and seating took a prominent placement in the 20’ tall concrete showroom.
