'A La Mode' Designer Profile: Berit NY (Series vol. 9)

Last but definitely not least, Berit NY is the final designer profile in the 'A La Mode' series.

My impression of Berit NY's style is theatrical and various time periods.

Here's more info from the source:

How did you get into fashion?
I got into fashion at an early age. I started sewing as a child, and my interest in fashion led me to start modelling at 13. I started with an agency in Atlanta, doing several castings a month, and through that experience I was able to network with local designers and contacts in entertainment. I was already making my own clothing so I decided to show a few pieces to some of the designers I worked with. They loved them and started booking me as a designer for their shows instead of as a model. My experience as a teenager helped me get into the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, where I went straight out of high school. FIT, more than anything else, prepared me for the day-to-day realities of being a full-fledged designer.

Did you go to school for training?
Yes, I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC with a degree in Fashion Design.

What do you do for inspiration? How do you get inspired to create a collection?
A lot of things inspire me: movies, nature, and history, even everyday objects. I try to be open to new possibilities when it comes to what inspires me. Really, all of life should be an inspiration, whether good or bad.

I tend to stick with themes that I am passionate about. In order for me to build a collection off a single theme or idea, I need that theme or idea to really stand out in my mind. It’s not hard to find a cool new idea to base a collection on, but if I don’t have passion about it then that weakens the collection. I also try to incorporate elements of my own personal style philosophy, and then add to that.

Do you prefer certain materials?

I like to mix materials. Texture, color and contrast always intrigue me, and my works usually incorporate this. As far as preferences go, I enjoy working with cotton blends, wool, velvets and vinyl.

Who do you design for ... Is it a specific person or a type of person?
I design for men and women who like to stand out, be seen, and express themselves; people who aren’t afraid to make a statement and who are a bit eccentric. Most of my clothing has an edge to it, but there’s also a touch of class and elegance. I say that my target demographic is the “well-mannered rebel,” and I think that sums it up pretty well.

'A La Mode' Designer Profile: Belinda Liu (Series vol. 8)

What words would I use to describe Belinda Liu designs?  Eclectic, edgy feminism ... Sexy with a sense of independence and power.  Am I right?  Take a  look at what Belinda says:

How did you get into fashion?
In a certain way [I] have always been preoccupied with fashion. At most events I was attending I felt the need to have the appearance to live up to my own perception of that event. While on some occasion I felt like playing the role of innocent lolita, at the other I was the "depraved". And there have been quite some occasions to attend to in my earlier years. But I could not always procure the proper outfit. Not the way I really meant them to be. Since I was never afraid of using scissors on fabrics and I always felt the need to adapt and adjust clothing I soon started to make outfits for myself. To suit some special occasion. I liked doing it, people around me liked the result and then I started to think of doing it for others. While observing others, I disliked many outfits on peers, particularly young women, I hated widely used trends of my generation and I was sure I could easily make women look better.

Did you go to school for training?
No. My mother is a painter. I myself have drawing skills. When I got into fashion I was obsessed to learn everything there was to it. At the same time, I started doing fashion design professionally and then I already found myself running not necessary a business but a fashion label. Most fashion schools available to me had a rather formalistic and theoretical approach that I rejected.

What do you do for inspiration? How do you get inspired to create a collection?
A collection is a concept about women. And women have a lot to express. I can be inspired from probably anything. Mostly sex. Or something related to it. I need to get the expression of sexuality in every collection. This is my personal imprint over garments and generally, in everything I do or create.

Do you prefer certain materials?
No. It depends on the collection. Sometimes I create an outfit starting from a specific material. Sometimes I have a concept and I need to find the adequate materials. One rule in respect of materials is always constant though: I never compromise on the quality of materials. If it needs to be rich then it shall be rich.

Who do you design for? Is it a specific person or a type of person?
Both. A collection is designated for a type of woman. Mostly a sexual powerful women. I can of course create a concept for a specific person. To suit an occasion, a season, a personality, an emotion.

'A La Mode' Designer Profile: Jonathan Liang (Series vol. 7)

Here's another hot, emerging designer that will show in "A La Mode" ... Jonathan Liang.  You'll definitely want to check him out ... these pictures are fierce.

How did you get into fashion?
Started after I got out of art school, it's a bold step for someone who is rather introverted like me.

Did you go to school for training?
Yes I did, at Raffles design inst. probably pursuing further in Paris

What do you do for inspiration? How do you get inspired to create a collection?
As I still have so much to learn, I am trying many ways to obtain my inspirations, such as working from a title, a context or even a phrase and images.

Do you prefer certain materials?
I like trying new materials but I also prefer ones which needs no ironing work!

Who do you design for ... Is it a specific person or a type of person?
For those who are inspired and can relate to my work, those are the ones I constantly try to reach out for, I believe they could also help me progress.

London Fashion Week Has Something for The Eco-Fashionista

London Fashion Week will address the growing movement of cutting-edge designers committed to working in a eco-sustainable way with BFC Estethica.

Made by Scandinavians - Camilla Wellton
Estethica, now in its ninth season has evolved to become the hub of London's ethical fashion industry. The success of this initiative, the strongest of its kind internationally, is evident in its rapid growth from its first season of 13 designers to 37 designers in this season’s Estethica collective.

All Estethica designers adhere to at least one of the three Estethica principles of fair-trade and ethical practices, organic and recycled materials and are selected for both their ethical credentials and design excellence. Fifteen designers are new to Estethica this season, these include ‘rescue and recycle’ luxury eco-bag brand Lost Property of London, which takes abandoned everyday fabrics and transforms them into fashionable yet practical accessories. The label works to improve the lives of impoverished communities in developing countries whilst recycling all waste and vetting suppliers for ethical integrity.
