Designers on a Roll with Creating Buzz

It seems it all started a few seasons ago when Mercedes-Benz streamed New York Fashion Week. Then designers got the idea to open their shows to the public. Now the bottom-line smart trend of creating buzz with the public at large, via the availability of live streams of fashion shows, is de rigueur.

Just last season, this trend was still in its somewhat early stages. There was some growth in the small handful of designers offering live streams. This season brings in new ways to create buzz including Alexander Wang's stream on the Internet and in New York's Times Square, live streams of the majority of the BFC's London Fashion Week, and Bailey's live stream in addition to the 3D simulcast of the Burberry show in select locations (top picture is from Burberry's show, courtesy of Vogue.it).

Now Armani has thrown his hat into the ring with not only his now usual live stream (on Friday), but also the opening of an exhibit at his Fifth Avenue store for an "up close and personal" look at some of his creations.

This is a unique opportunity to view these dresses up close, such as the ensemble Lady Gaga wore to the 2010 Grammy Awards, the gown Anne Hathaway wore to the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, the dress Halle Berry wore to the 2003 SAG Awards, the gown Alicia Keys wore to the 2009 Academy Awards, and the dress Penelope Cruz wore to the 2010 Golden Globe Awards among others.

The exhibition opens to the public on March 5 (just a few days before the 2010 Academy Awards) and will be on display through March 21, 2010.

Sweet Temptations

I have always readily admitted that I am a shopaholic. I can easily find joy in shopping for coffee makers, furniture, socks and stocks. However, my true shopping love is fashion, perhaps closely followed by interior decor.

I often see tempting styles on various sites. The latest temptations I found seemed ridiculously bountiful. I had to talk myself down from the ledge (the ledge of the busted budget cliff) several times. I am sharing my temptations with you.

The olive Eco Lux sweater coat is perfect for transitional weather (that I'm now eagerly looking forward to). I love the hemline and color. I found this at ideeli.

The Claudio Orciani nappa, elbow-length gloves (from Yoox) were calling to me, whispering "Come on, you know you want me." in my ear and tugging at my heart. I love the sophisticated look of long gloves with 3/4-sleeve pieces. As an added bonus, the ruffle trim provided the perfect delicate, lady-like edginess.

I imagine those lovely gloves would perfectly complement this purple 3/4 rouched-sleeve cropped cardigan (also from ideeli). I instantly visualized the ensemble paired with a flowing, full top and jeans, a menswear shirt and pencil skirt, or a sheath dress.

The gray wrap, sleeveless, one-button sweater will look great with layered over another sweater, tees or  dresses.  This was another Yoox clearance deal.

Yes, it seems I've been fixating on my cardi weakness lately.

However, I did eye several other items:

This multi-colored L.A.M.B. satchel is very different and cute, plus it has my favorites; rolled, short handles, no obvious label and multiple pockets. It was in the L.A.M.B. sale at Gilt , but is also on sale at Saks along with the beautiful, red satchel from Chloe (the strap on my daily bag broke last week so my eyes were wandering).

Hot iPhone App for Budgeting Those Fabulous Purchases

I often speak of busting the budget.  Well I found one iPhone app that I'm very happy I stumbled upon.  I told a couple of co-workers about it ... and they immediately wanted to know more.   With such enthusiastic responses, I thought it might be great to do a post on this one.

I've found it helpful with not only watching the budget, but also discouraging the reckless spending ... something I've been a little guilty of lately.  It's called Wealth Watch.

It's free - That's a beautiful start
It doesn't take much time to set it up- I'd say I spent @ 45 minutes

You just enter your monthly income, expenses (bills, mortgage, insurance, savings, etc.) and budgets (food, entertainment, clothing, etc.).

This lovely little app then automatically computes your daily disposable income (DDI) - Facing reality in a way that's not intimidating is always good.  DDI is much less less intimidating than net worth or total debt.

I actually felt pretty good since I set my savings credit card expenses higher (dreaming of financial freedom) and still had a DDI that I could live with.

To track you spending, you just enter the amounts, dates and notes for each purchase (under the track tab) and you can quickly view a report of where your money is going, in addition to what's left.

Plus, tap on the about tab to hear from the creator/author ... there's more info plus a video to watch and info on the Wealth Watchers book - yep, I thought that was a good temptation, so I gave in.  To get the app, go to: Shop iTunes

Also - Have you ever heard a song you love but have no clue what it is?  Shazam is an iPhone app that can tell you the song, provide other info about the artist (including videos and tickets) and take you to iTunes to download the song.  For more info, go to: Shazam

Salvatore Ferragamo - Why I'm Currently Loving This Label

I am really loving the last few seasons of Salvatore Ferragamo. My eyes have zoomed in on the label's shows since designer Cristina Ortiz has taken the creative helm of the women's line.

The previous shows were more traditional, but seemed to be stuck in a style rut. The styles looked dated; not as in old styles, but more as in geared towards past, loyal customers. That is, an older age group, thus limiting their ability to turn the heads of newer customers.

In 2008, Cristina Ortiz came like a breath of fresh air. Her designs are rich, visibly luxe. The cuts imply resort living, yet at the same time are totally wearable in the office (obviously, the corner office is basically a prerequisite to afford this label).

The cuts are classic but the materials, colors and details render the styles modern and hip.

Just look at the beautiful neckline detailing on the red batwing-sleeved dress. And I just love the look of the 3/4 sleeve, double-breasted croc trench with the strong shoulders (both from the Fall 2009 Collection) ... who does that?
The two looks from the Spring 2010 Collection (I think I was drawn to the colors because I'm longing for Spring) could easily fit "ladies who lunch", a lunch date or concert as well as work (unless you're in a field that has a rigid dress code).

I am looking forward to seeing the Fall 2010 Collection.
