Redefined Economy: The Birth of Savvy Luxe Shopper Market

As the economic picture continues to look unstable, many consumers are on the hunt for quality investment pieces at reduced prices. Shoppers at all income levels, including the affluent, are shifting from the shop ‘til you drop shopaholic mentality to investing in long-established high-end goods … and they’re willing to wait for these items to go on sale. This is what I call the Savvy Luxe Shopper.

In response, there are a growing number of retailers who are addressing this demand for luxe bargains. Many are offering discounts and incentives for the first time. Tiffany’s has reduced its prices. Kate Spade is hosting “Private Sales” which are announced to its email subscribers.

Online sample sale sites are fast becoming a booming business in the US and abroad. In addition to the eight US and 10 European sample/private sale sites with access links on my blog (there were half as many sites just a year ago), the next sample sale site to open is Net-A-Porter’s Outnet.

A Look at A Designer: Ellen Christine Millinery

With an intimate and irresistible shop in Chelsea, Ellen Christine Colon-Lugo and her team creates fantasy. Ellen Christine brings more than a good imagination and a selective eye to her craft. Hats became part of Ellen Christine's life ever since her grandmother let her select a pink straw hat for Easter. Her handmade hats have earned her a devoted East Coast following.

Ellen Christine has a costume background ... Master's and doctorate degrees in costume history from New York University. She loves working with antique garments and her inspiration often comes from the theatrical and couture.

"Historicity plays a big part, since my fascination is with old-school line, form and construction methods. Antique trims, and details have always fascinated me, and I have a core collection of feathers, silks, flowers and buttons, that are all pre-1947, so they often get incorporated into the designs."

Ellen Christine produces five collections a year. The store works as a showroom for editors, stylists and other designers ... to be inspired, and plot their shoots, or lines. Her creative hats are used quite frequently by Conde Nast, mostly with W and Vogue, providing them with fresh pieces

for their editorials, as soon as ideas pop up.

Who buys Ellen Christine creations? Editors for their weddings, pop stars for CD covers, in addition to any normal, naked head that walks into the shop.

"People may read about us in a magazine in Park City, and call in an order. Or their daughter is getting married, and they want a fabulous hat as the Mother of the Bride. We do bridal, as well, and in New York City, it's everything from cathedral length beaded veils, to goth black lace."

A Designer You'll Want to Watch

Asli Guler is an up and coming designer to watch. Based in Instabul, Asli has worked for quite a few labels. She was the manufacturer's design director for Marks & Spencer and Espirit. She has also designed for several retail labels, including Topshop, Express, Victoria's Secret and Mexx.

Asli just recently started her own label; Asli Guler. I'd call her style urban vintage. She is strongly influenced by the lady-like details of the twenties, often with lace details that remind me of brooches.

Fall 2009 New York Fashion Week

Well, if you looked at my posts on fashion weeks' schedules (Fashion Week Schedules), you already know New York's Fall 2009 Fashion Week started today. I'd call that a ray of sunshine on a cloudy and still cold day in New York.

Here's the icing on the cake; Mercedes-Benz has gallery photos and videos from today's shows.
